Chapter 2

I had been pacing for 10 minutes before Bean finally woke up.
She lifted her head up and looked around lazily before trying to get up.
"W-where are we? It looks like a—"
"A prison cell," I said, "In the Darkwing Kingdom."
Bean jumped up and said, "WHA-WHAT?!"
She tried to break down the door before freaking out and sitting back down.
I explained to her what had happened while she was unconscious. When I mentioned Dean, she flipped out—again—and tried to break down the door—again.
Dean's words echoed in my mind: Your friends are being, ah, interrogated by my men.
I said, "Why would Dean be interrogating the others? The Hydron Kingdom has already been conquered—"
"But you just said the Aguaisol Kingdom was still resisting," Bean said, "And with Grant dead, Gg would be the new leader of the Kingdom. My father will probably find some way to get the secrets of Aguaisol defenses out of him."
"Ok," I continued, "What about Brenton?"
"Nate," Bean replied, "Don't be an idiot. You know that Brenton is the King of the Fire-flame Kingdom and the Emperor of the Vulcanus Empire. That's the defensive secrets of two major nations in the mind of my brother. And now he's probably in an interrogation chamber…"
"Alright," I said, "In that case, why are Carlos and Tristan and Storm being interrogated? The Orion Kingdom has already been conquered. The Roshan Kingdom isn't a target of the Darkwing Empire—"
"Not yet," Bean muttered.
"—and Tristan isn't a high-ranking official in the Aguaisol Kingdom," I finished.
Bean looked directly at me. "They might not be interrogating them, Nate."
I looked at her skeptically. "Then what—"
"I was here, Nate. I was here a year ago as a shadow. I know what they do to prisoners who are of no use to them. They either torture the prisoners until they find it boring—or they kill the prisoners."
***
The door swung open about an hour later, and I wasn't happy to see our visitor.
A tall, green hedgehog stood in the doorway. A mop of ragged black hair sat on his head. He wore a black jacket and a dark green shirt. Above a pair of black, ragged jeans were a pair of katanas on his belt.
I said, "Isaac Shadow-vine. What are you doing here?"
He looked down at me and smirked. "Isn't it obvious, Nate? I am here to boast! But if you're talking about what I am doing in the Darkwing castle—well, isn't that obvious too?"
Bean stood up and said, "Get on with it or I'll knock you out, Isaac!"
Isaac held his hands up and said, "Alright, fine. I have become a Darkwing intelligence operative. I helped them defeat the Hydron, Orion, and Obsidian Kingdoms."
I lunged at him, but one of the guards kicked me in the stomach. I fell down onto the floor, my head slamming onto the hard stone.
The world swirled around, my head pounding. A sharp pain shot through my head every few seconds.
Bean started to lunge at Isaac, but I said, "Stop, Bean! Stay back!"
She glared at Isaac for a second and then sat down beside me.
Isaac said, "Now, I have also come here to inform you that the Aguaisol Kingdom has fallen. The Federation fleet has been almost completely obliterated and only one hundred of your aircraft still patrol the skies. Less than 10,000 soldiers fight against ours now."
I said, "Stop bluffing, Isaac, how many are there really?"
He chuckled. "Well, that's the thing about it, Nate. I am being completely serious. 70% of your forces have been annihilated. But somehow, there are still 3 nations in the Federation not under Darkwing control. Coincidentally, the leaders of those kingdoms are here in this castle."
Bean said, "What's your point, traitor?"
"My point," Isaac said, "Is that they will either succumb to us or be killed."
I laughed. "If we die, how will you get the defense secrets of the kingdoms?"
Isaac chuckled. "In that case, we will simply fight until those kingdoms either give up or are completely annihilated. And that would mean millions of lives lost—perhaps if you contacted your people, they might surrender?"
Bean said, "Like that would happen! Just get out of here! Your face is about to make me puke."
Isaac replied, "Fine. The guards will bring you some food in a few minutes. Don't expect to eat like a king, Nate."
He walked out of the cell.
***
Isaac was right about one thing: the food was terrible.
The guards gave us two bowls with stuff that looked a little bit like chicken noodle soup. I tried some of it and almost threw up.
It tasted just a little bit like chicken soup. It was probably very stale chicken soup that had been made with rotten chicken and year-old noodles. Bean spit it back into her bowl when she tried it.
She shouted, "Is this the stuff they feed to the war dogs?!" and threw the bowl at the wall.
I said, "It's all we have right now."
Bean frowned and crossed her arms. "I would've preferred a dish of cookies," she said.
"Well, Isaac did say not to expect a feast, didn't he?" I ate some more of the soup, just managing to keep it from coming back up.
Bean asked, "Why aren't we being interrogated right now? I mean, we would've been two of the most likely candidates for questioning…right?"
I almost didn't hear her. All I could think about were the others: Storm, Tristan, Carlos, Brenton, and Gg. And what about our friends who were in the Federation who weren't on vacation like we were? What had happened to them?
My question was answered when the door opened again. This time, someone was thrown in—Clarisse, the one who had sent me the text.
She looked even worse than Bean.
Her forehead and arms were bandaged, and the bandages were covered with blood. She had a huge cut on her leg and a dark, red, ugly cut on her cheek.
The door slammed shut, and Bean ran over to Clarisse.
She pulled her onto my cot and shook her shoulders.
Clarisse started to open her eyes a little.
She mumbled, "N-Nate?" when she saw me. Then she turned and said, "Bean? What's going on?"
I said, "You're in a prison cell in the Darkwing Kingdom. We got back to the Federation and we got captured. The helicopter was shot down."
Clarisse asked, "Where are the others? Where's Will?"
I shook my head. "He went down with the plane."
She looked down and started sobbing. Will had been her boyfriend for almost a year.
Bean said, "He tried to avenge as many of the people killed in the invasion as he could. I'm sorry."
Clarisse sniffed, wiped her cheeks, and looked up. She said, "The, um, the capital city of the Orion Kingdom, Orios? It was attacked first. The entire city was demolished. No one survived."
I looked at Bean. "David was in the Fire-flame Kingdom, right?" She nodded.
Then it occurred to me. Storm's parents lived in Orios. They almost never left the city limits. Maybe they did every few weeks, but they still stayed inside Orios most of the time. If they had been in the city during the attack, they had probably been…killed.
Bean had obviously realized the same thing. She looked at Clarisse and then back at me.
She started trying to comfort Clarisse before the door opened again.
This time, it was Isaac. He walked in with a triumphant smile on his face.
"Ah, I see that your friend was dropped off. I hope that she isn't too badly wounded." His voice dripped with false sympathy.
Clarisse glared at him and shouted, "EITHER TALK OR GET THE HECK OUT!!!"
Isaac backed up and held up his hands. "Alright, alright; I came to inform you that the Fire-flame Kingdom has fallen. Brenton succumbed to the interrogation when we threatened to kill you, Bean. He told us precisely how to defeat his aircraft and battleships."
"As for the Vulcanus Empire," he continued, "He hasn't told us anything yet. We may have to carry out that threat on someone else…Nate, perhaps?"
I glared at him. Isaac said, "No, I suppose not."
He walked towards the door and said, "Oh, one more thing. Your friend Carlos has given up. He couldn't take the interrogation any longer."
Bean said, "You mean he's—"
"That's precisely what I mean, Bean. Carlos Leocardio is dead."
